WHERE ARE YOU MOST LIKELY TO FIND SOME MAKERS FOR WHOM MAKING MATTERS!?

Some of Australia’s most effective community spaces do not look like clubs. They look like workshops filled with timber, tools and half-finished projects.
The Men’s Shed movement began in Australia, with the first recognised shed established in South Australia in 1993. Today, Australia has more than 1,000 Men’s Sheds. The national association supports over 1,200 Men’s, Women’s and Community Sheds combined, with more than 50,000 Australian men taking part.
Each shed operates independently, so activities vary. Members may repair furniture, practise woodwork, shape metal, restore equipment, garden, keep bees or build toys and benches for local groups.

Experienced members pass their knowledge to beginners, while everyone works at a comfortable pace. Tea, conversation and shared problem-solving are often as important as the finished object.
The sheds are non-commercial community organisations supported through memberships, volunteers, councils, donations and government grants. Australia provides $1 million annually through a national competitive grant programme for equipment, improvements and wellbeing activities.
The idea succeeds because conversation happens naturally while hands are busy. People arrive to make or mend something, but often leave with new skills, renewed purpose and familiar faces waiting for them next time.

URBAN FORESTS

New York City has officially launched its first-ever citywide urban forest plan, unveiled by the Mamdani administration on April 21, 2026. The initiative aims to expand tree coverage across all five boroughs to 30 percent by 2040, with explicit focus on climate justice and heat equity.

The strategy departs from traditional, request-driven tree planting. Instead, the city has divided neighborhoods into over 400 planting zones, prioritizing areas with the highest heat vulnerability and lowest existing canopy coverage. Low-income neighborhoods currently average 19 percent tree canopy coverage, compared to 26 percent in wealthier areas. This disparity directly correlates with heat-related mortality: Black New Yorkers die from heat stress at twice the rate of white residents, and heat-related deaths exceed 500 annually across the city.
Trees are being treated as core climate infrastructure. The city's existing 7 million trees already generate $260 million in annual ecosystem benefits, removing 1,100 tons of air pollution, reducing stormwater runoff by 69 million cubic feet, and providing energy savings equivalent to approximately 8,000 households. As the city adapts to intensifying heat, expanding the urban forest becomes both a public health imperative and an act of environmental justice.

IGNORANCE

Premeditated Ignorance is the quality or condition of deliberate unawareness. It is when people do not know because they do not want to know.

If they did know, they would have to take responsibility for the knowledge; and, they would thereby be required to renegotiate their identity and to relinquish their status, privileges, and authority, that are derived from the false order of knowledge.

At the very least, they would be compelled to leave their comfort zone.

The active choice to stay uninformed, avoid the facts, and ignore the consequences of one's actions. This relies on avoiding responsibility, protecting self-image, and preventing uncomfortable emotions.

Why! To:

  • Avoid responsibility:
  • Steer clear of facts to escape blame or legal guilt.
  • Protect comfort:
  • Stop bad feelings and the fear tied to hard truths.

People make selfish decisions because they did not check the facts. Groups reject outside views to maintain the status quo. However, courts do not accept intentional blindness as a true defence.

SAWdust

VIDEO ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVrzBAU5O30

Firstly, lets get one thing straight this wood below is terable stuff, its rotten  and its no good good a timber AKA sticks and planks wood/. Bunnings wouldn't stock it and foresters cannot see a profit in this sort of stuff except as FIREwood. It is absolute rubbish and it is not worth the fuel to get. SO, leave it alone where its found otherwise someone is going to see beauty in it and call out wasteful foresters for their lack of care for the planet, but why bother (also spelt bovva) etc. etc. With that in mind take and look have a think and perhaps bovva-a-bit.......

"Every piece of timber used in my creations is from a tree that had to be taken down due to it being damaged or dangerous, falling in a storm or salvaged from old pieces of furniture and off-cuts from other woodworkers".... Sophie Sellu
